World Diabetes Day is the largest diabetes awareness campaign in the world. It is celebrated every year on November 14, the birthday of Frederick Banting (a researcher at the University of Toronto), who discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1921. Acting early against diabetes is the theme of World Diabetes Day 2026-2027. The November 14 campaign focuses on early diagnosis and reducing risk factors. Acting at the first signs helps improve access to care, limit risks, and protect everyone's health. According to Health Canada, in Canada: - About 3.9 million people aged one and older live with a diabetes diagnosis, representing 9.7% of the population. - 1.9% of adults aged 20 to 79 had undiagnosed diabetes. - Nearly 300,000 Canadians live with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. - 6% of adults in Canada live with prediabetes, which increases their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. According to the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec (INSPQ), 730,000 people aged 1 and older were living with diabetes in Quebec in 2024-2025. As for Diabetes Canada, it estimated in 2024 that 31% of people living in Ontario have diabetes or prediabetes.
